There’s still time to register and vote if you haven’t yet filled out a ballot in the Nov. 4 local elections being held in many parts of Montana. Here’s what to know:

Who is eligible to vote?

Voting is open to U.S. citizens aged 18 and over who have been Montana residents for at least 30 days as of Nov. 4.

How long is registration open?

Late registration for residents who haven’t previously registered to vote is available at county election offices through the close of polls at 8 p.m. Tuesday — with the exception of Monday afternoon from noon to 5 p.m.

Can I vote in person?

Yes. Local elections are generally conducted by mail. Voters who choose to vote in person can, however, pick up and cast ballots at county election offices.

Can I still return ballots by mail?

You shouldn’t. It’s now too late to return ballots by mail, given the requirements that county election offices receive them by the close of polls. Mail ballots can be dropped off at election offices or designated collection sites through 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Where can I find more information on registering to vote?

Information on registering and locating your county election office is available on the Montana Secretary of State’s website.

What’s on this year’s ballots?

This year’s elections will elect leadership positions for many cities and towns, as well as decide on city, county and school district ballot items in some parts of the state. Some voters who live outside city limits may not have an election to participate in and may, as a result, not receive a ballot this year.

MTFP has published a rundown on major races across the state, as well as detailed ballot guides for the communities where we have full-time local reporters: Missoula, Great Falls and Helena.

How can I check on my ballot and/or registration status?

Voters can check their registration and the status of their ballot on the state’s “My Voter” page, voterportal.mt.gov.
