The revamped heritage center weaves Indigenous stories throughout the entire museum, rather than isolating them to a single exhibit. The expanded space includes a dedicated smudging room, displays chosen by each tribal nation’s leaders and unflinching exhibits on genocide alongside celebrations of Native resiliency. Nina Sanders, the state’s first Indigenous collections curator, worked with tribes to ensure Native communities could “tell the stories themselves.”
