Merchant category codes, or MCCs, are four-digit numbers that identify the types of goods or services a business supplies. Gun shop-specific codes were first issued by the Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization last year after reporting by the New York Times in 2018 found that some mass shooters used credit cards to purchase multiple weapons at once, and that there was no way to flag that activity.
