Gov. Greg Gianforte has tapped Larry Flynn to take over as director of the Montana Department of Transportation after Chris Dorrington left the agency’s top spot on Oct. 1.

MDT is responsible for construction and maintenance of the state’s transportation infrastructure, including state highways, railroads and airports. The agency has about 2,000 employees and a $1 billion annual budget.

Flynn has served as deputy director of MDT since 2023. Before that, he was the agency’s chief financial officer for 16 years.

“I am honored by the opportunity to lead the Montana Department of Transportation, a place I’ve dedicated my life to,” Flynn said in a Thursday press release. “Thanks to Governor Gianforte for trusting me to lead the MDT team. Together, we will continue to invest in our roads and bridges, improve road safety, and deliver top notch customer service to Montanans across our state.”

Dorrington is the third director to announce a departure from one of Montana’s executive agencies in the last few months. Misty Ann Giles stepped down as director of the Department of Administration at the end of August, and Charlie Brereton said he will leave his post as head of the Department of Health and Human Services at the end of the month.
