The ruling over the selenium standard comes after U.S. Geological Survey research has demonstrated an increase in the concentration of selenium in the Kootenai River watershed. Selenium supports cellular health in small amounts, but too much can lead fish to develop spinal and facial deformities or result in reproductive failure. Fish eggs exposed to too much selenium are often too deformed to reach adulthood, or they fail to hatch at all.
