State settles decades-old lawsuit over inmate mistreatment

MISSOULA — The Montana Department of Corrections has reached a settlement with human rights groups that ends a nearly 30-year-old lawsuit over prison conditions stemming from a deadly 1991 prison riot at the Montana State Prison in Deer Lodge. Missoula U.S. Magistrate Judge Jeremiah Lynch on Friday signed-off on the settlement brought by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Montana, and Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center.

Lawsuit claims Yellowstone County judge, sheriff’s officer violated civil rights in illegal immigration arrest

A Yellowstone County man who claims a judge illegally ordered his arrest is now suing that judge, and the officer who arrested him, in federal court. In a lawsuit filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Billings, Miguel Angel Reynaga Hernandez claims former Yellowstone County Justice of the Peace Pedro Hernandez violated his civil rights when he ordered Cpl. Derrek Skinner to arrest him, despite the fact that Reynaga had not committed a crime.
