Prison construction approved in 2023 starts as legislators this year approve more money for expansion

Construction began on prison expansion approved by the 2023 Legislature as lawmakers in 2025 propose $436 million in further expansion with bills that are currently en route to the governor’s desk. The construction and investment come as the Department of Corrections continues to face capacity challenges, with some Montana inmates currently housed out of state or in local county jails. The 2025 Legislature has also tried to address a range of challenges associated with holding inmates in jails and out-of-state facilities.
